How To Improve The Communication
Ranju Kumar
In many instances and studies, it has been concluded that communication between emergency doctors and patients is a common complication that is experienced. One of the main reasons that this occurs is because of the fact that the doctors who work in an emergency room setting do not develop long term working relationships with the individuals that visit their facilities. This can account for a break down in communication. Here, I will be sharing ways on how to improve communication between emergency doctors and patients.
The first thing that must be understood when it comes to communication levels between emergency doctors and patients is that each one has their own "voice". The patient "voice" often uses terms, phrases, and descriptions is a very casual manner. These individuals will often be able to express how the condition that they are experiencing or the physical complications that they are experiencing affects their day to day life as they know it. Then, there is the "voice" of the emergency doctor. This "voice" often includes an objective outlook that is based on years and experience in health, science, and medicine. The different "voices" are on two different levels. This can break down the communication easily.
When an individual goes to the emergency room to meet with a doctor, they often do so, on the notion that these professionals are educated in their field and can assist them quickly and effectively. The emergency doctor, in turn, often walks in confidence when it comes to their skills and abilities. When approached with a specific issue, the doctors will offer scientific based conclusions to the patient. In many instances, patients will actually find that they are sometimes over powered by the expertise of the doctor and that they are not valued when it comes to the actual communication levels. When attempting to improve the communication between emergency doctors and patients, it is important to ensure that both parties feel as if they are valued and that their opinions matter.
The next area of interest that is quite common when it comes to the communication barrier between doctors and patients is the fact that many doctors fail to allow their patients to engage in the decision making process when it comes to tests, prescriptions, and other types of treatments. Many patients feel as if it is best to engage in the many decisions that affect their health, and rightly so. However, many doctors often forget how important that this is to the patient. If communication is to be enhanced between emergency doctors and patients, a certain amount of decision making must be left to the patient.
As you can see, there are many different reasons why communication between emergency doctors and patients is often burdened. However, just as there are many problems that occur with this type of working relationship, there are also many resolutions that can be put into place in order to establish better communication between emergency doctors and patients.
