How To Make Fleece Blankets
Gregg Hall
Mankind has tried all types of things to blanket himself in warmth. Animal skins such as bear, raccoon, rabbit and squirrel were more than likely the fist blankets. Animals were not that hard to catch, were the main food staple and man quickly learned that the skin of the animals would keep him sheltered from harsh weather. Of course there was the problem when the skins got wet they took days to dry.
As we progressed through time we had outside clothing and blankets for warmth; two separate layers. The lamb's hide (sheep hide) came to be the best discovery by man because of the layers and natural oil on the fleece fiber repelled moisture and did not get wet to the skin. Somewhere along the line in all likelihood a Sheppard fleeced his sheep, probably to comfort the sheep in hot weather and found that the fleece made a great insulator against the harsher weather.
From the humble beginning of Fleece's discovery to the great woolen mills that wove the fleece to woolen blankets in mass production for our service men in World Wars 1 and 2 to the refined Merino wools of today, Fleece Blankets have now become staples. Pre 1980, anyone going out of doors during extremely cold weather had to bundle up in layers upon layers of heavy course fabric. Blankets not made of Down were most likely cruder wool than the finely milled wools we know today.
There are now well over 100 types of fleece, so the consumer must read the label to know what they are really purchasing. With thanks and accreditation given to Malden Mills of Massachusetts, the 1981 invention of Polartec fleece changed the way the world protected themselves from cold.
Fleece to Go, Fleece to Stay
Fleece is the perfect blanket solution for blankets on the go. The blankets are durable, non-bulky, lightweight and pliable, making them easy to shove into a bag, throw over a shoulder, drape over a seat, travel on a plane or wrap baby in. Because they are not bulky, they a perfect for preschooler's naps, diaper bags, daycares and car blankets. Because the fleece blankets are so pliable, they make the perfect chair throw.
A fleece blanket is the perfect picnic blanket and has repellant qualities for spills. It is a wonderful television watching and reading blanket to curl up in. And for those romantics out there, the perfect blanket to share!
Fleece for baby
Fleece is extremely lightweight, dries quickly, insulates when wet and provides twice the insulation properties of merino wool and four times that of cotton. Because fleece is lightweight it is cooler yet maintains body heat. Fleece is very durable, lasts years and years and is naturally hypoallergenic. This makes a fleece blanket the perfect soft, lightweight but warm cover for baby.
The Fleece Blanket as a Gift
The Fleece blanket makes a perfect gift because of its versatility. Naturally hypoallergenic, durable, soft and of exuberating quality, a Fleece Blanket is an excellent gift choice for adults of all ages, children and infants. And best of all, it won't Fleece your wallet!
