Applying For Dual Citizenship
Anirban Bhattacharya
The term, expatriate, is synonymous to anyone who has simply decided to live in another country, but still maintains his original nationality or anyone who has renounced his previous citizenship. Going by this definition, simply relocating to another country does not mean loss of existing citizenship. Alternatively, becoming an expatriate does not mean you are a criminal or anti-patriotic. Simply put, expatriation denotes that you have decided to live in any particular country because of financial, political, or any reason whatsoever.
Expatriation is an appealing issue that often summons patriotic emotions whenever dual citizenship is considered. Many are of the view that obtaining dual passport often results in a loss of the existing citizenship. This is not necessarily true...in fact, laws and legislations related to dual citizenship are complex, but evenly laid down, making it possible for anyone interested to be acquainted with.
How is expatriation related to dual citizenship?
The entire act of applying for dual citizenship starts with expatriation. As an individual, you can certainly relocate to any other country because of some good reasons, (which, of course, you have to justify at a later stage), and even take it a step further by seeking citizenship of your new country. This is quite normal because dual citizenship is universally recognized and almost all countries have legalized dual citizenship. However, choosing a country to opt for dual citizenship is a major decision as it puts a lot of your hard-earned money at stake. In case you are seeking dual citizenship, you should give due consideration to political, economic, and social factors because dual citizenship may be restrictive in terms of adapting to new laws, and costly in terms of real estate purchase or other kinds of investment.
