How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
Mich Crawley
We all have an impact on the earth. We even learn about that impact in science classes when we are in school. The trouble is we are always in a debate about our impact on the earth and the damaging effects of factories and other things we do. Some will still argue that global warming is not happening. When in truth we just have to look around the places we live to see the effects we have on the earth and how harmful it can be. For those who already have a degree of awareness on the impact we have you can learn how to reduce your carbon footprint just by reading the following.
One way to reduce your carbon footprint is to sign up with a green energy supplier. This means that the electric company is based on renewable energy resources rather than oil or natural gas. They may use wind or hydroelectric power to produce your electricity. This will make your carbon footprint zero in the energy arena.
Next you will want to turn of lights, televisions, and other electronics when they are not in use. This means that the DVD player is not left when you are not using it to watch a movie and your other rooms are dark when you are not in them. The energy produced by objects that you are not using and leaving on is extreme because it is wasted energy.
You can turn down your central heating unit during the winter. You may need to wear a full set of pyjamas rather than shorts and a tee shirt, but you will be using less energy and therefore reducing your carbon footprint.
You can also turn down your water heating setting. This means you may not have a hundred degree water, but really how many of us shower in one hundred degree water. You should have the water heat at the temperature you like to shower at to reduce your waste of energy.
If possible check the timer on your central heating system. A lot of us have acquired the gadget to set the temperature in our homes to a constant setting, so that the temperature will change automatically without having us use more than we need. You don't need to heat the home while you are away so having the time set precisely for your schedule is handy and energy efficient.
Next fill your dishwasher and washing machine with full loads rather than partial loads, rather than wasting power on smaller loads. You will also save on water. If you just have a few dishes you may even hand wash them, if you will need them the next day.
Some more handy tips are outlined below:
1.Fill the kettle with only the amount of water you will need to make coffee.
2.Don't waste water during your other household duties such as brushing your teeth. You can turn the faucet off while you are brushing and turn it on to rinse.
3.Unplug your mobile phone or laptop computer when they are done charging.
4.When you go shopping you should only do it once a week rather than several
times. Or do the shopping on the way home from work if it is on your way home. Try not to drive out of the way.
5.Hang your wash instead of using a dryer. It is a lovely energy saving technique and provides you with fresh smelling clothing.
6.Instead of using a gym you should elect to go running or find a gym you can walk to.
There are many ways you can reduce your carbon footprint, most of the ideas are just common sense or having the knowledge about what damages the earth's resources. The idea is for us to leave a legacy to our children, but if we are not conscious of our effect on the earth now there will be limited resources left for our children or later generations. We are still improving technology to provide energy saving techniques as well as providing energy saving cars to avoid using all the natural resources we have. Speaking with other individual's can help you learn other carbon footprint saving techniques. Most often when we combine our thoughts we learn more about how we can help protect what we have to use. Other ways to reduce the effect of your carbon footprint can be found online if you have the inclination to learn.
