The truth is that there are a lot of websites on how to start an autobiography. Many of them are great. Some are not so great. One really cool thing about trying to figure out how you want to present your autobiography is that there are many different ways to do it - many ways that I hadn't even thought of.
Try any of these items to start the process:
1. Use a tape recorder to tell your story.
2. Organize your photo albums
3. Keep a personal journal.
4. Answer questions online and have your answers compiled into a nicely bound, hardcover book that can be passed on from generation to generation.
5. Ask family and friends to tell you one story they remember about you.
6. Fill out a pedigree chart or family tree.
Tell It How You Want To
Find your voice. People who know you should find you in the pages of your autobiography. They should find a stranger. Although it's uncomfortable sometimes, it's best to tell your story honestly. People will respect and appreciate your honesty.
How Can You Get Started Immediately?
How? Writing Lists.
You can make lists about anything: family, friends, loves, homes, schools, etc. Lists are so simple and yet so powerful. No sooner will you start writing lists than your mind will fill with memories. Start writing.
Your autobiography will come together as you in ways you couldn't imagine as you build and expand lists.
Example of Autobiography Wikipedia is a great resource for finding autobiography samples. You can look there for further ideas to help you get started.
Take It Slowly
Now that you've started, you'll be tempted to try and sprint to the end. Don't give in to the temptation. Savor your memories. Allow your story to take shape over time. Your time with your story will be more gratifying because:
You'll remember more of your life.
You'll give others time to contribute.
You'll learn a lot about yourself and the life you've lived.
You'll find your true voice.
Like I've said before, writing your story can be a very fulfilling endeavor. Reflect on it. Savor it. Let others contribute and rejoice in your life.
