Before you start panicking, be aware that it ordinarily takes between three to six weeks to get your first job. If you hear reports of shoppers getting their first assignments the very same day they applied, this isn't typical.

You won't hear from a company unless they have a need for shoppers in your area. It's not personal if you don't hear from some companies right away, or ever. Consider contacting them again in six months or a year, or visit their website regularly for updates.

The application process is very important in getting your first job and it is your only chance to create an initial impression with the company. Many mystery shopping companies will reject applicants that do not complete the application form, so answer every question.

Some questions on the application may seem inappropriate eg. age, race, marital status. These questions are asked so that the mystery shopping company can match your demographics to the client's needs. For example, if the assignment is to mystery shop a pet grooming service, the company has to give the assignment to someone who has a pet.

As a mystery shopper, you will be required to complete questionnaires and provide reports. Be sure to proofread your application before you submit it for any errors in spelling, grammar or punctuation. Being thorough and accurate is a big part of the job.

If the company requests for a signed copy of their Agreement or a handwriting sample, mail it in promptly. You want to exhibit the fact that you can be relied upon if you are given an assignment.

If you want to increase your chances of getting contacted for an assignment, apply to as many valid companies as you can and keep in touch with them regularly. Your keenness will pay off.
