How To Fish For Bass
Cold weather bass fishing is certainly a experience for even the most expert of bass fishing enthusiasts, but then again those that usually undertake bass fishing during the colder fall and winter months often cannot go as long without their hobby as others! Fishing for bass in the summer months can be productive and plentiful but fishing for bass in the colder weather can be nothing short of a nightmare if you do not know how to catch bas in such conditions. You cannot use your usual summer techniques and hope for success. Instead, you have to do your research, be patient and also be prepared to change your techniques and tactics from day to day!
First and foremost, you should take care of yourself when bass fishing in cold weather. This is an important point that many bass fishing experts neglect to mention when advocating winter and cold weather ass fishing as a pastime. Make sure that you are wrapped up against the cold because it is often a couple of degrees colder on a lake than it is on land. The water actually cools the air somewhat. You should have plenty of layers on, access to hot food and keep moving wherever possible, even if you just tap your foot on the ground and flex your fingers. It is important to keep your blood flowing as it should rather than risk exposure and illness.
Unlike us, bass are cold-blooded creatures that can live in ice cold water during the cold weather of late autumn and winter. They do not hibernate as some creatures do or swim to warmer waters. They do stay put in the lake that they call home, but that does not mean that they are anywhere near as active as they are in warmer weather. To enable them to survive in colder weather, the bass slow right down. Their systems slow right down. In fact, it could take them days to digest food, minutes to breathe because they do not need to take oxygen on as often. However, they do try to move to slightly warmer waters within the same area to shelter from the cold. This may be a bank featuring vegetation, deeper waters or a hole in the bed of the lake somewhere. Put together, this all means that you have to work a lot harder to catch the attention of the bass and fool them into biting. It can be a long and tedious process, but if this does not put you off then read on for hints and tips that could help you!
Cold Weather Bass Fishing Tips
My first tip may sound a little surprising given that we are talking about cold weather fishing but try to find a lake with warmer temperatures, such as those in Florida or Tennessee. The waters will still be cold obviously, but the water temperature will be slightly higher than In Canada and other similar places. The higher the temperature the more active the bass are so you stand a better chance of getting a bite if cold weather water temperatures are a few degrees up!
