If you are just getting started with blogging you may want to get your feet wet with blogger.
This free blogging software is very user friendly and you can be up and running in no time at all. Blogger is owned by google and therefore it is very easy to setup your Google Ad sense advertisements as well.
The only downside with Blogger is that it is usually hosted on the company servers. This is usually not a problem, but I have heard stories where people have been closed down for alleged abuse issues and they have lost their data.
However, there is a way that you can store your blogger data on your own server if you so desire.

The second free blogging software and the one that I use is wordpress.
This software is fantastic and has a wide support base among the blogging community. There are also a lot of useful plugins available to you for free.
You can also download themes to change the look and feel of your wordpress blog.
Some of these themes are free and you will have to pay for others. But it is a quick way to give your blog a professional appearance.
You can also design your own individual themes if you so desire, but this will require a little bit of technical knowledge and is not for the faint hearted.
There are also people on the internet that will design your custom wordpress theme for a fee.
You can choose between hosting your wordpress blog on your own server, or you can choose to have it hosted for free at wordpress.com.
However, be warned, if you choose to use the free hosting service you run the risk of being shut down if you abuse their terms of service.
I prefer to host my own wordpress blogs as I have full access of my data.
This is the option that most serious bloggers prefer, because they have full control over their domain names, the look and feel of their blog as well as free reign on the topics they want to write about without the fear of being shut down and losing their data.
Don't be to worried about setting up your wordpress as most web hosts that provide Cpanel also provide Fantastico. This allows you to have a wordpress blog setup very quickly without you worrying about the technicalities.
