Africa Mobile: Senegal And Angola
Robert Thomson
Over 11 million people populate the land of Angola, which is located in south central Africa, borders Namibia, Congo, Zambia, and the western coasts of the Atlantic Ocean.
Angola is a former colony to the Portuguese who achieved independence in 1975, and its government is nominally multi-party. Its capital is in Luanda.
The country has a wealth of natural resources, such as diamonds and oil, and it is one of the fastest growing economies in all of Africa. The infrastructure in the country is currently being re-built, with the growth in the economy fueled by increased oil production.
With over 11 million people, Angola's primary language is Portuguese, yet it recognizes the Kongo, Chokwe, and the South Mbundu regional languages. Due to this Portuguese influence, the main religion is Roman Catholic, with a culture of Bantu mixed with Portuguese. Its population is comprised of a variety of ethnic groups, such as the Ovimbundu, Kimbundu, and Bakongo.
Senegal
The Republic of Senegal, located in western Africa, borders the Atlantic Ocean, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. In prehistoric days, Senegal left powerful archeological stamps on the land. The east parts of Senegal were once connected to the Ghana Empire; the discoveries of Tukulor along the Senegal River made the country very famous. Inhabited since pre-historical times, Senegal has an extensive and long history archeologically, culturally, and politically.
Achieving its independence from France in 1960, Senegal is a semi-presidential republic with over 65 political parties. In fact, Senegal is one of the most successful democracies established after post-colonial rule in Africa.
Senegal's economic reform policies in the 1990s have resulted in an economic turnaround, with GDP growing 5% annually. With a diversified economy, including products such as cement, mining, food processing, and tourism, Senegal exports chemicals, textiles, groundnuts, fish, and calcium phosphate.
With over 11 million people populating the country, Senegal is an ethnically diverse country. Most of the country follows the Islam religion, with only 4% of the population abidibg by Christianity.
