Arlington city is located just across the Potomac River and not far away from Washington DC. It has about 203,000 residents and is a part of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Formerly it was part of the District of Columbia, it was retroceded to Virginia in a July 9, 1846, act of Congress that took effect in 1847.

With a land area of 26 square miles, it is geographically the smallest self-governing county in the United States. CNN Money ranked Arlington as the most educated city in 2006. It ranks within the top 100 among cities having population over 50,000 with high percentages of Master's/Doctorate degree holders, Forbes' Web site ranked Arlington as the 9th richest county in the United States in 2006, based on the County's median household income of $87,350.
