Welcome To The Bahamas!
Damon87 Lindner87
Every place has their own unique sights and the Bahamas are no exception to that rule. With a culture steeped in rich tradition, pirates, slaves, and sea-faring, it is not surprising that the islands have their own unique sites.
The island of Nassau offers visitors everything from the Junkanoo Summer Festival in Arawak Cay to historic museums throughout the island. People interested in the native wildlife of the island will enjoy visiting the Ardastra Gardens and Conservation Centre or the Botanical Garden with 18 acres of tropical flora. There are numerous forts left from the 1700s that can be toured or visitors can go to the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas to view the various pieces of artwork created by natives of the islands.
Grand Bahama Island offers tourist the Lucayan National Park, the only place were all of the island's ecosystems can be found at once. The world's longest underwater system of limestone caves can be found here as well as the remains of Lucayan Indians that were excavated on the island. The Heritage Trail was the main road leading from Old Freetown to Eight Mile Rock to its west. When Freeport was founded, this roadway was left to nature and the five mile nature walk goes past what is left of ?The Hermitage?, the oldest intact building on the island.
Cat Island is home to the remains of the Devereaux Mansion, an 18th century plantation house, as well as the highest point in the island chain. Mt. Alvernia can be climbed and adventurous souls will be able to tour the small monastery built there.
Andros offers tourists a chance to learn how to batik, a form of dying fabric, at the Androsia Batik Factory and Outlet Store. Lessons can be taken with prior arrangement and visitors will go home with a 2-yard piece of fabric they made. The Tongue Of The Ocean, a shelf located seventy feet deep and plunges straight down over six thousand feet, is part of the world's third largest barrier reef, and can be explored a mile out from the island. ?Mariner's Well?, a natural freshwater spring can be also be found on Andros and it is believed to have been used by pirates and then by sponging crews.
Bimini offers visitors huge limestone blocks that were found off its coast and are believed to be part of road that led to the Lost City of Atlantis. Anyone who wants to speculate on the half-mile stretch of stone can do so as they are near the shore in only twenty feet down. The Exumas offer tourists a chance to see iguanas in their natural habitat, and explore Kidd's Cove, believed to be the hiding place of the notorious pirate Captain Kidd.
No matter what your Bahama travels entails, there is something among the islands that will appeal to young and old alike. Whether it's hiking, snorkelling, or visiting ruins, the Bahamas are a great vacation spot. And that's not counting the warm water, sandy beaches, and umbrella drinks.
