When any service or product that has the word wedding attached to it, i.e. wedding dress, wedding reception, wedding caterer you can expect the price to be inflated.

There are some steps that you can take so that you don't fall into the trap of paying too much.

Always find out the price of the service or product before you get emotionally attached to it. It's hard to walk away from something you have set your heart on having whether it's the wedding dress, the church, the type food that you will serve your guests at the reception or the wedding favors that decorate the reception tables.

If you find that the price is too high or the service isn't exactly what you want, don't accept it at face value. Tell them that their prices are too high or the service is not quite right. Ask if they can improve on their offer.

Never accept an offer the first time around keep your leverage to negotiate. Tell them you will get back to them at a future date and let them know if you will accept their service. This not only gives you a chance to think about it and do more research, it also gives them a chance to rework their proposal. Remember, their in business and want you to use them. Be fair though and even if you decide not to use them, at least call them and let them know why you made the decision you did.

Trust your own judgment to make sure you are getting what you are paying for. Some vendors add extras to their offers, pay attention and make sure you are not paying for things you don't want or need.

Never go into a contract with someone or buy something you're not happy with just to be nice or just because they have been recommended by a friend or relative.

It's your wedding; you have the right to change your mind about any part of it. Always find out how much money you'll get back on you deposit if you cancel or change something. Also, find out what kind of compensation you will receive if the vendor backs out or doesn't provide what you agreed to.

Always make your purchase with a credit card so you will have protection in the case of a dispute. A check is also a good alternative but not as good in a dispute as the credit card.

Do yourself a favor and sit down with your future spouse and plan, plan, plan. This will not guarantee that every little thing will be perfect but it will give you a big advantage when you start putting the wedding together. If you plan properly you can save a lot of money that you can use to set up house and can keep you from dealing with a high amount of debt when you first start out in your married life.
