Villa Real Madrid Spain
Ken Morris
The plaza, or square, has been around for centuries and has had its share of fires. It was completed in 1619 under Philippe III (check out his statue located in the plaza) but its current shape is from 1790 when it was rebuilt after the most recent fire. It has been the sight of bullfights, festivals and even beheadings; truly a public square. Though The Plaza Mayor hasn't retained a lot of its architectural works of art, it has retained its charm and allure.
Though the plaza doesn't see all of the political action it once did, it is still the center of Madrid's social scene. On a typical day you can see a wedding procession or groups of people of all ages conversing. It can get crowded since it's not as big as you might imagine; only about 100 meters on each side.
There are several to enjoy or a coffee or an entire meal while you people watch. Some are located on the second or third floor of surrounding buildings so you can enjoy a nice panorama while you dine. After you're finished, take a tour through the many shops. There are several antique shops selling everything from military memorabilia to coins. Boutiques are plentiful with a variety of home furnishings and fashionable clothing.
Remember that Madrilenos (those who live in Madrid), like to enjoy a late dinner so don't arrive before 10 or you'll be dining with tourists. Dinner is a social event and usually takes 2 to 3 hours at least so plan for it if you'll be dining with locals. Make sure you are rested because dinner and a night out is an all night affair. Turning in early is usually about 2 or 3 in the morning.
Madrid is not a particularly dangerous city but care should be taken around the plaza since it is a draw for locals and tourists. It can get quite crowded during a festival so it can be easy to get distracted. As with any large city be cautious of pickpockets but don't be paranoid or it will ruin your experience.
The Plaza Mayor is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Spain. Don't miss it!
