When you start to watch the wrestler online you have a film about a washed up wrestler (like the ones in the wwe) called Randy The Ram Robinson who was at the peak of his fame in the late 1980s. He now sees his career turned upside down and living in retirement for the past twenty years. Mickey Rourke plays the part of Randy giving this character a masterful performance.

While Randy is out of the bright lights that once shone on his illustrious wrestling career, he performs in front of small crowds while at the same time repairing relationships that soured when famous. Here we see his conflict to restart his bond with his estranged daughter played by Evan Rachel Wood. And also we see him start a romance with a friend who works as a stripper, played by Marisa Tomei.

However Randy's life history was one that was played to perform in front of thousands of adoring fans and for this reason he now finds himself to be a shadow of the man he once was. After suffering a heart attack in a routine wrestling match he was advised by his doctor that if he kept wresting he would endanger his life. This is what coerces him to start viewing life from a different perspective. As we watch the wrestler online we see how he starts to build up his relationships with those close to him like his daughter and to then begin a romance with his exotic dancer friend.

As we witness Randy rebuilding his relationship with his daughter and love life, we also catch a glimpse in the world of pro wrestlers. When we watch the wrestler online we do not see the bitter feuds, jealousies and fighting as they interact behind the ring. Rather the director portrays these wrestlers as a compact unit looking out for each other which is in contrast to what you would expect if you see live shows.

The film director, Darren Aronofsky, masterfully portrays Randy as the deflated here who in a flash more or less loses everything and how this takes him down a spiral of desperation.

But then we go from this tone of desperation to one of joy as Randy makes his come back and regains his hero status made even more sweeter by the fact that his daughter is no longer estranged but also sees him as a hero and he also has a more meaningful romantic interest. The whole film is excellently accompanied by great melancholy rock music of the 80s with tracks especially written by Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose. In fact in the film Randy is portrayed as a great Guns and Roses fan.

While we watch the wrestler online we see moments of high drama with that of sadness and then ones of great happiness. This is a film for which Mickey Rourke is a leading contender for winning the Oscar and few can say that he does not deserve it.
