Volunteers can register on the day itself at 8:45am and the joining fee is only $15, which is inclusive of an event t-shirt. Joining fees or entries must be accomplished prior to the day of event. BCCH Diabetes Education Coordinator Connie Honea reveals that at present, 75 individuals have already registered for the annual race.
Although the fundraising annual race will award diabetes education scholarship grants to deserving individuals, the true goal is to “encourage people to become more active". Honea adds that research have revealed how diabetes can be prevented or at the very least delayed with the proper exercise and diet routine.
In the previous year, the annual race was able to bequeath scholarships to three diabetics. The scholarship entitled the patient to attend a half-day class that teaches people everything there is to know about coping with diabetes in spite of the fact that it still has no cure at the present.
At 7:00pm on the 1st of November, Honea invites people to attend the lecture of inspirational speaker Frank Atherton at the Fallon Convention Center. The talk is freely offered to the community.
Last October 15, 2006, the PartnerRe women-only race was held by the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club at the Botanical gardens. The event featured a 5-kilometer race exclusive to women. Ever since the 1st PartnerRe race was held at 1998, almost $100,000 has been raised to provide funding for beneficiaries of the organization. This year’s event also featured a 3-kilometer race for girls. Funds for the event will be used to help women in diabetes overcome their problems with diabetes. Prizes totaling up to $10,000 are offered to winners of the event. Many participants are hoping that they’ll be the lucky ones to win the 7-night cruise in the Easter Caribbean. A $500 cash gift will also be awarded to the school with the highest number of participants.
