Black And White Flower Photos
Ben Johnson
Imagine walking around in a garden on a nice sunny day. How beautiful everything looks! The sunlight seems to bring out all the colors and shapes so well.
But: believe it or not, it is actually better to take photos of flowers when it is cloudy outside. Taking photos on a cloudy day makes the pictures have that soft and subtle touch.
There are several more ways to make your flower photos stand out. Here are some methods that professional photographers use to make their pictures look good:
Get rid of a distracting background by shading it - take a piece of cardboard or some similar stuff and hold it so it casts a shadow on that background you prefer to see less of.
Maybe you need more light on your favorite flower? Then borrow the bathroom mirror and use that to reflect the light to where you want it. Favorite trick of the professionals.
Is there such as thing as making clouds? Yes, there is. Just take a white plastic bag or a piece of white cloth. Get a wire coat hanger and bend it into a square shape. Take the hanger and attach it to the plastic bag or the cloth. Now hold it above your subject to diffuse the sunlight while you are taking the picture. This is how the professionals do it.
Using the sun as a back lightning for flower photos can prove to be quite interesting. In order to get the best effect, you can try placing the sun right behind the flower. This is not an easy task, but once you get the hang of it, then you can use it to your advantage. Some types of flowers will look semi-transparent when lit from behind.
Around noontime, the sun is at its peak and actually producing the most dull type of light for picture-making. Try taking out your camera at dawn... or near sunset. You will be amazed at the difference.
Nowadays every camera has a zoom lens. Use that zoom function to make your flowers stand out better, by "zooming in". This tends to give you less problems with distracting stuff in the background, since it enlarges your subject relative to what is further away.
Even though you may not be a professional, these tips can help you take professional-looking photos of your flowers and your garden as you experiment with the tips above. If you use a digital camera you can take a lot of pictures, and simply delete those you do not like.
