Area rugs are often important purchases for every home, but not everyone who wants to purchase one knows everything that should be considered before making the final decision. Purchasing an area rug can be fairly complicated and since it can be such an expensive purchase and you may not be able to return the rug easily later, you want to be extra careful when looking for the rug that is right for you.
The most important thing in a rug that you need to think about is the color. If you have the opportunity to plan a room around a rug, such as if you are moving into a new home and have money for new furniture, then this will give you a lot of freedom.
If you are among the rest of us and do not have this opportunity, then you will have a limited area of color with which you can work. Choose a color that is already present in your target room in a decent capacity, since the eye will notice immediately if the color is out of place.
You also need to consider whether the rug you choose has a pattern to it or not, since the presence of patterns in the rest of the room such as on the wallpaper or the furniture may make it appear a bit too "busy" visually. This is not desirable, since the eye will have too much to take in. It just makes it unpleasant to look at.
The size of the rug is almost as important. A rug that is meant to cover most of the room should have at least a couple of feet between the edges of it and the wall. This frames the rug and makes it appear more like a piece of art than anything else and the reason that you do not want it to extend all the way to the wall is that it will appear to be more like carpet and that is not what you want.
The shape of the rug can also add some character to the room. Even though most rugs are square or rectangular, there are other shapes that are becoming more available and these can help you make your room look more unique.
The rug material is also something to consider, since synthetic materials do not last as long or feel as good as natural ones such as wool or cotton.
