Your My Best Friends
Tom Miller
George called me from California to order some pepper spray from my website www.tamcodefense.com He wanted to order the strongest formulation of pepper spray in the largest container we carry. I recommended the 18% Wildfire Pepper Spray in a one pound canister.
George went on to explain why he needed such a large amount. He used up his last canister while walking his two dogs on a street near his house. As they were walking along, enjoying the scenery, suddenly a pair of pit bulls came out of nowhere and began to attack his pets.
George was prepared for this problem as it had happened before on a previous walk. He had with him a large can of high powered pepper spray which he sprayed in the muzzle of the attacking dogs. Instantly the pit bulls lost all interest in killing George's pets and began urgently rubbing their faces in the grass. .
Lucky for them the effects of the pepper spray are temporary and there is no permanent damage from its use. In an hour or two they will be back to their normal state. Hopefully though they will have learned a lesson and will be less likely to attack anyone again.
George was able to safely remove his dogs from the scene without any further danger. He was grateful that he was able to defend his dogs from an almost certain death with his pepper spray. He also realized that if he wouldn't have been able to stop the attack it could have escalated to the point that he himself could have been a victim.
He made an interesting comment to me about saving some of the pepper spray for the owner of the attacking dogs. When I asked him about it, he explained that sometimes the owner will become aggressive after his dogs have been subdued. George has never had to use the spray on an owner but he keeps some back just in case.
While there are no statistics for ?dog on dog? attacks it seems to be pretty common. My neighbor was walking her cocker spaniel in our neighborhood and ?Barney? was viciously attacked by a Chow from a nearby home. ?Barney? needed stitches and had a couple hundred dollar vet bill. Of course the owner of the Chow felt no responsibility to pay the bill.
There is however quite a bit of information on dogs biting humans. In fact the Center for Disease Control estimates that 4.7 million Americans will be bitten by dogs this year. About 12 of those attacks will be fatal. Children are most likely to be bitten by dogs.
Dog bite prevention is mainly the duty of the dog's owner but many owners are unable or unwilling to take this responsibility. If you or your pet is attacked by a vicious dog, pepper spray may be used to prevent serious injuries. The US Postal Service was the first to use pepper spray to protect their mail carriers. It has been deemed as an effective deterrent to aggressive dogs.
There are pepper sprays that are designed for protection from dogs. A belt clip will allow you to have the best access to the canister should an attack happen. Pepper foam and pepper gel are less likely to be blown back on the user by the wind. They also have the added benefit of sticking better to the attacking dog and therefore incapacitating the animal longer.
Most states allow the carrying of defensive sprays for the purpose of stopping dog attacks. Check your state and local laws before purchasing canine pepper spray.
