Window Treatments Living Room
David Kraft
Home decor trends continue to evolve, and 2009 looks like it will be no exception. Some argue that window treatments are the most important part of a room, and although many beg to differ, there is no doubt that a successfully executed window treatment can add a lot of appeal to a room. If you want to instantly change the feel of a room, addressing the windows is a great and easy place to start. Window treatments also have the advantage of being functional in that they can help improve energy efficiency, increase privacy, and reduce fading of your interior.
In line with the recent push to "go green," today's window treatment shoppers are more and more drawn to materials that are organic or sustainable in nature. Expect to see woven wood shades and blinds made from bamboo, grasses, and other woods rise in popularity. They are typically offered in a number of neutral colors that work well in modern as well as traditional interiors and the eco-friendly materials ensure that the environmental impact is minimized.
Complicated drapery designs are losing a lot of steam recently, but those looking for a designer look can still find a number of luxurious fabrics out there to use on their custom window treatments. Silk, velvet, and even suede add a lavishing feel to any room, especially when paired with trims, beading, and shimmering hardware aimed at bringing the fabrics attention to viewers. Used together, drapes and trim can tie an entire room's decor together and give a sense of "wholeness" to the entire living space.
While simple linen and silk textures will remain popular in 2009, expect to see an uprising of fabrics with bold colors and patterns as well. Large scale florals will get more action this year, especially in uses where the window treatment is meant to set the tone for the room. Also expected to be popular is the color mimosa, which Pantone labeled as the color of the year for window treatments. The yellowish color works well with nearly every other color and adds a sunny feeling to any room.
Sheer window treatments will also continue to be popular as they have a nearly unrivaled ability to offer both privacy and light control. Today's sheers are available in a number of playful textures and colors and offer varying degrees of shimmer and drapeability while adding a chic effect to any room.
One of the biggest trends to monitor this year in window fashion will be the increasing use of technology. Hunter Douglas, for example, has motorized nearly all of their window shades and offers decorative hardware and controls. Switches and remotes have been around for a while to operate motorized window treatments, but this year expect to see an increase in the number of companies that have internet-enabled shades. Yes, that's right. Think you forgot to close the shades before you left for work this morning? Not to worry. With today's technology, you can literally get online and close them from your office.
