Workplace Team Building Activities
Simon Smith
What is 'team building'?
It is generally accepted that whilst a team
comprises a group of people, a group is not
necessarily a team. A team is best described as a
group of people working together towards a common
goal. Team building is therefore a process of
motivating and enabling the team to reach that
goal.
In order to achieve better collective performance,
companies need to ensure that a common
understanding and commitment to the shared goal
is established amongst all their employees. This
is why many businesses and organisations invest
heavily in team building training.
Corporate training programmes are usually based
around a series of team building activities
consisting of various leadership challenges,
planning exercises and physical activities. These
invariably involve problem solving, lateral
thinking and use of initiative, requiring
participants to draw upon a whole range of skills.
Employers of Reservists recognise value of their
team building training
What many companies do not realise is that team
building activities form a core part of training
for Reservists. By employing Reservists,
companies therefore receive all the benefits of
the training without the cost.
All Reservists are given the chance to train in
adventurous activities such as climbing, skiing,
sailing, trekking, abseiling, canoeing and white-
water rafting. The Armed Forces place a high
value on team building activities such as these
because they are character-building as well as
help develop fitness, self-confidence,
determination and perseverance. They also teach
individuals how to lead or work effectively
within a team, solve problems, communicate,
present ideas and organise a complex event or
process - all highly transferable skills to the
civilian workplace.
Out of those companies which already employ
members of the Reserve Forces, 96% believe that
Reserve service improves team working skills.
SaBRE is currently running a campaign to
encourage all companies to become a Supportive
Employer by publicly pledging their support for
Reservists in their employment, either now or in
the future.
