Bottom Up Window Blinds
Leroy K. Calstard
When contemplating the type of window dressing to use in your home design project, it is easy just to consider curtains or drapes, as these are relatively inexpensive, easily available and can be bought ready to hang. However, interior shutters or window blinds should not be disregarded as potential alternative window covers, and these can create a really dramatic effect used on their own or in combination with a fabric covering.
The difference between window coverings and window dressings is often overlooked in a home design scheme. While a plain functional blind that ensures privacy and prevents light from getting in can serve the purpose of window covering, some additional detail may be required to achieve a fully dressed window. Window dressing creates a complete style for the window, a valence or drapes used in conjunction with the blind may add the finishing touches and a dressed look.
Interior shutters provide both function and decoration. They can block out the light, keep in the heat, and still look fantastic. They offer a different function to exterior shutters, which need to be hardier to protect the home from bad weather and high winds.
Fitting interior shutters is a very simple task for those with basic DIY skills and a little patience. Attaching the shutter to an interior window frame you will require secure two by four studs to fasten the shutter screws. After screwing the hinges in place you can then hang the panels. The panel will slide into one side of the hinge and a pin will be required to hold it in the correct position. Exterior shutters require a little more skill to ensure stability. You may need to consider drywall anchors or similar hardware.
The easiest time to finish your shutters is before you hang them. This prevents mess within the home and allows paint to dry evenly, without risk of runs. Applying primer to the shutter panels will also improve the evenness of the painted finish. Vinyl panels are low maintenance as they never require painting. Cleaning the shutters with a duster or soft cloth is usually all that is required. For heavier dirt warm soapy water can bring your shutters up to their original condition.
Using interior shutters in your home can add a cozy atmosphere to your home and can provide character all of their own. Shutters with large slats can be known as plantation shutters, traditionally found on the plantations of the south, while shutters with narrower slats tend to be the reminiscent of colonial style houses in New England. In general, solid wooden shutters represent a traditional American style.
