Penile Erectile Dysfunction: What Are The Causes?
Simon Chan
One of the many curses of extra ordinary advancement of human civilization relates to abnormal sexual behavior of human beings. Sexual perversion on the one hand is on constant rise; on the other hand, there is a section of the population that is experiencing the sexual inefficiencies in some form or the other. And the quick pace at which this size is expanding is quite alarming.
But there is some good news and this relates to the increasing awareness of common men of the sex related issues. So any sexual inabilities in the part of men are no longer attached with stigma and shame that used to be the case even a few decades ago. Today's men are matured and informed enough---thanks to the invasion of media--- to treat sexual inabilities as one of the disorder of biological system that can be treated through proper medical intervention.
In the USA, most of the sexual disorders of men are related to erectile dysfunctions. Men's sexual problems may also relate to the lack of libido. In most of the cases it has been noticed that a man who is facing an erectile problem still has strong libido and the contrary is also true in some cases. Just forget the medical terminologies and let's explain in plain English that erectile dysfunction is an inability in men to sustain the firmness of the penis to successfully perform the act of intercourse by controlling the point of ejaculation.
Now there can be myriad causes of Ed. We can divide them in the following broad categories:
Psychological
An estimated 15 - 20% of ED cases are caused by this factor. In addition to anxiety or depression, the wrong choice of the partner may also result into a psychological blockade to successful penile erection.
Excessive alcohol intake or intake of drugs to reduce blood pressure and the anti depression drugs can also add to the condition for psychological impotency.
Neurogenic Causes
The nerves perform the important function of sending the message of sexual stimuli to the penis. But when this mechanism is affected then penis does not receive the impetus to expand. This condition may arise due to the reasons like surgery or a pelvic injury. 10 - 15 percent ED cases are reported to be caused by this factor.
Organic causes
This is by far the commonest of all causes of ED in most of the men. Organic erectile insufficiency can manifest in many ways, but the core of the problem lies in arterial blood flow to and within the penis. In normal situation erection takes place as on receiving sexual stimulus, the blood vessels in penis expand to allow an increased volume of blood into the penis. This makes the penis increase in both length and girth. Still, the process of erection is not complete. The penis should hold the blood to sustain the firmness and rigidity until intercourse is complete through controlled ejaculation. Now a veno-occlusive mechanism ensures that bloods do not leak back into the veins to end the rigidity of the penis. Thus ED occurs when this flow of blood to the penis is impeded and capillaries do not function properly.
Whatever may be the cause of ED, there is a solution for every problem. If you happen to notice any disorder, visit your doctor today and get the cause detected.
