Certain businesses are inherently seasonal in nature. The classic example would be a ski resort such as Steamboat Springs in Colorado. Obviously, the resort does big business during the winter months when you, me and everyone is recklessly throwing ourselves down the mountains. In the summer, however, business slacks off although the resort tries to come up with other ways to lure people such as mountain biking. Obviously, the summer business is a small fraction of that done in winter.
Sites on the web can also be seasonal in nature. If you have a site offering ski products or services, you are going to have the same problem as the ski resorts. Early fall through early spring are going to be busy times. Late spring through the summer? Picture the proverbial tumbleweed rolling across your site. So, does this mean you should just stop working on your site? No, particularly if you are pursuing search engine optimization.
Search engine optimization is rarely about now. It is almost always about the future. What do I mean? There are few changes you can make now to suddenly produce top rankings in the next few days. Well, at least if you are pursuing white hat methods. Instead, your optimization efforts should be tailored to where you want to be in the future. Depending on how far along you are, the future could be a couple of weeks or six months.
When you hit the off season for your site, you should not be going on vacation. Okay, you can go for a few weeks. Instead, you should be analyzing your optimization efforts. What do you need to focus on? Where did you come up short? One of the critical steps will be re-evaluating your keyword strategy.
Obviously, keywords play a fundamental role in any optimization effort. That being said, most people pick their keywords when they first build their site and never revisit them. The world is not a static place. It changes and so do the phrases people type in to find things. You should always re-evaluate your keyword phrases after the hottest sales period of the year. Inevitably, you will discover some new phrases that you can use when planning for the next big sales season.
