Cabo Roig ? The Costa Blanca's Jewel
Steve Locke
The exclusive Costa Blanca resort of Cabo Roig is situated on the Orihuela Costa section of the coastline between Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada. The clean ?blue flag? beaches, the beautiful cliff walks and the bustling Cabo Roig ?strip? attract holidaymakers from all over the world. Very popular with the British and Irish, Cabo Roig also attracts a large number of Spanish visitors during the hot summer season, the Spanish particularly love the beach and the sea. Well placed for visiting the entire Costa Blanca region, Cabo Roig is an ideal location for a touring holiday. Cabo Roig is often quiet during the winter and spring and this can be a good time to visit as even in December and January the temperature can be up in the 70's.
Cabo Roig is well known for its amazing detached villas. On the beach-side of the busy N332 coastal road there are a large number of detached villas with beautifully landscaped gardens, many with their own private swimming pools. Some of the finest villas are those along the spectacular cliff walk to La Zenia, they all have fabulous views across to the resort of La Manga. Whilst enjoying this walk, you will really have the feel for "how the other half live" and it is fun to dream about perhaps one day owning one of these ?millionaires? villas, but for most it remains just that - a dream. The prominent 16th century watchtower around which Cabo Roig grew is now incorporated in the famous restaurant which overlooks the fine marina.
Cabo Roig boasts a couple of excellent clean sandy beaches and these are a big draw for the holidaymaker during the hot summer months, they do however rarely get uncomfortably packed and you can usually find a nice spot to sit and enjoy some serious sunbathing. The beaches are well maintained and safe for children and pedalos are available for hire for those who want a little exercise and adventure.
Whilst on a trip to Cabo Roig do not miss the cliff walk to La Zenia, this walk takes you along the back of Cala Caleta beach, above the marina and onwards to Cala Capitan and then to La Zenia beach. This is a very enjoyable walk and offers some exceptional views of the surrounding coastline, don't forget to take your camera or you will miss some great photo opportunities. You will spot La Manga in the distance and on a clear day you can pick out the towering apartment blocks of this up and coming resort.
On a visit to Cabo Roig you can generally expect fine weather, this part of the Costa Blanca coastline enjoys its own micro-climate and is generally recognised as being one of the healthiest places in the world to live. Cabo Roig is blessed with in excess of 300 sunny days every year, and enjoys an average temperature of 20 degrees centigrade. Rainfall is scarce and mostly falls during the winter months, but don't be surprised to see a heavy downfall in late August or early September, when, after many months of hot sunny weather, the odd thunderstorm is not unusual. Temperatures during the summer months can reach 40 degrees centigrade but usually Cabo Roig enjoys a cooling sea breeze.
The ever popular and improving Cabo Roig ?strip? boasts a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants, with something to suit every taste. New commercial units are opening up every month and this can only be good for the holidaymaker, as ever increasing choices become available.
There is plenty to see and do in and around Cabo Roig, and having a rental car would be a great advantage. For golfers there are 3 excellent golf courses within a 5 minute drive and other no more than a half hour away. The go-karts at Punta Prima will be popular with the children and this is a great place to spend an hour or two, they offer cars for all age groups and abilities and even have some mini-carts and mini-quads for the young ones. Be sure to take a trip into the local town of Torrevieja, the busy Friday market is huge and is well worth a visit.
All in all Cabo Roig is the perfect place to get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life, enjoy some sunshine and re-charge your batteries.
Cabo Roig is in an ideal location close to the AP-7 motorway and within an easy drive of both Alicante and Murcia airports. If coming from Alicante get off at junction 763 (La Zenia), if coming from Murcia get off at junction 768 (Dehesa de Campoamor). You will find Cabo Roig on the N-332 coast road.
