Do You Know What A MMORPG Is?
Keith Londrie
RPG games were first introduced around the year 1970 when people didn't play them on computers but the old style way with a piece of paper, a board and dice. When computers became popular so did the computer RPG games. We can name a few which took part of our childhood: Dungeons and Dragons, Ultima, Might and Magic, Pool of Radiance, Quest for Glory, etc.
Nowadays RPGs evolved, you don't play them in DOS mode anymore, they have almost real landscapes and you can play them with your friends from all over the world. What a MMORPG usually does is to recreate your world in a fantasy like world where you can be whatever you want. Although these games are fun, some people take their character too serious and the risk of affecting their real life is high.
All MMORPG players want to progress, want to be the best and this is what usually keeps them focused on the game although the game play is repetitive. Most MMORPG games and RPG games have "experience points" which are given to the player after they preformed an action like slaying monsters or ending a quest.
With these "experience points" the player can evolve throughout the game: they can have more strength, more man points, can play in certain areas etc.
MMORPG games not only keep players glued to their chair to win more experience points but they also have a social impact. Most players usually make friends in the game and often feel that the life given by that game is better than theirs.
The MMO game has a system of characters with a well established role in the whole game community. For example when going into battle you need tankers which will take all the damage because they are stronger than healers for example, who have the power to heal but die faster, and last but not least the players who make a lot of damage but also take a lot of damage like wizards.
In some games there are characters which are known to manufacture armor and weapons and everyone depends on them and takes them into battle to gain levels. As we can see the game has a well equilibrated structure which creates a bond between all the players.
Some MMORPG have their own economy and people who make virtual money in the game can change them in real money at a certain currency.
Although money making in games is a slow and meticulous way, many people are not millionaires just because they sell certain items in some games. As we can see the game is not only a way to relax but also a way to make money and takes more part of people's life.
Although MMORPGs are fun and a great way to relax and meet new people from different cultures, it is becoming a damaging phenomenon, a drug and an alternative to real life for some people. Whenever you start playing a MMORPG make sure it doesn't affect your real life.
