Discover Sydney's Best This Autumn
Keith Paulin
There is no better place to start your discovery trail than at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Bridgeclimb offers visitors the opportunity to climb and explore one of the most recognisable Sydney icons, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. More than two million people have climbed the 1439 steps to the very top of the bridge, seeing the Sydney skyline in all its magnificence, from dawn to dusk.
Next is a compulsory stop at the Sydney Opera House, one of the most visited attractions in Australia, with over four million guests visiting the centre each year. Over one million people attend performances and a quarter of a million take the guided tour of the Sydney Opera House a complex with a globally recognised profile that has become the symbol of Sydney and an icon for Australia and Australian culture.
From the Opera House it is just a short stroll to The Rocks, the birthplace of Sydney and Australia, right in the heart of the city. Rediscover the past and connect with Sydney's heritage in The Rocks. See one of the many historic attractions or just stroll through The Rocks to gain an insight into the people and the place through time.
Then discover The Rocks of today shopping, street buskers, entertainment and some of Sydney's best restaurants all form a memorable tourist precinct, ready to surprise locals as well as international visitors alike. Visit The Rocks Markets and browse through antiques, artefacts and art. Explore the many cafes and fine dining restaurants or visit a few of the thirty three galleries, museums and art establishments dotted amongst the heritage buildings.
Amazing glimpses of Australia's history can be found down the side streets or visit the gallery of craftspeople from The Society of Arts & Crafts of NSW. Or just watch the daily cavalcade of life in The Rocks pass by as you sip on a caf latte.
A short walk will bring you to Darling Harbour, one of the best waterfront entertainment centres in the world and a not-to-be-missed venue for national and international travellers.
A remarkable harbour front setting, Darling Harbour hosts some of Sydney's leading attractions including Sydney Aquarium, Imax Theatre and Sydney Wildlife World. In addition, Darling Harbour is the home of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, host to national and international conferences, conventions and exhibitions.
Whatever the time of day or evening, Darling Harbour is full of entertaining activities and there is always plenty to see and things to do shopping in Harbourside, dining at Cockle Bay Wharf or King Street Wharf and even street entertainers strolling through the tourist precinct.
Autumn in Sydney also hosts the sport of kings; the Autumn horse racing at Randwick Racecourse at Easter and throughout the following weeks sets the punters hearts racing. And for the family, the Royal Easter Show is a must see with the best country produce and livestock on show as well as lots of family-friendly fun to be had with live entertainment, carnival rides and even a beauty pageant.
Sydney is a major city with a range of great accommodation options from backpacker hostels such as Sydney Backpackers in the city centre, to mid-range hotels like the Menzies to upscale waterfront hotels, the most endearing of which is the Sebel Pier One Hotel. The Sebel sits at the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and is actually built over the water as part of the refurbishment of one of the original Sydney wharves. Watch the sun set as you have a cocktail or dine alfresco overlooking the beast harbour in the world.
Year round, Sydney is always a remarkable travel experience, but in Autumn the city is extra special; and remember Autumn is Sydney is March to June down under!
