A Job Application Form
Charles Fuchs
So, it is time to start looking for a new job. Are you prepared to fill out your job application form? It used to be that only companies offering minimum wage or retail job positions required that you fill out a job application form, but now many corporations are having even the most professional applicants fill out the form. Do you know what you will need to provide the detailed information?
A job application form may seem like a piece of cake, but in fact you will have a small amount of space to present yourself in a professional manner. You need to know what information to include to keep your job application form irresistible to your potential employer. The first step is to make your handwriting neat and legible. If an employer cannot read your job application form, he or she will toss it in the garbage. If you are able to fill out a job application form online, do it. This way your first impression will be professional.
The other thing to consider when filling out your job application form is to watch your spelling. Whether in person or online, there will be no “spell-check” for your job application form except you reading it over. Be sure you do. If an employer sees spelling or grammar mistakes on your job application form, they may think that you really do not even care enough about getting a job to put in the time and energy to read over your application.
Another thing to check when filling out your job application form is the accuracy of your information. Be sure you know the dates you were employed from the present back at least 10 years. Most job application forms will ask for your last three to four jobs, though government agencies will go all the way back through your very first job. Sometimes it helps to make yourself a handwritten list that you keep in with all of your job hunting material. You can keep adding to your list every time you change jobs so that you always have a reference.
Finally, do not lie on your job application form. If you do not know something and you cannot look it up, then admit it. If you have a criminal history, you need to be honest about it. Lying on your job application form can cost you your job later, and then how do you explain why you got fired to your next potential employer? Honesty is always the best policy when filling out your job application form.
Also, when you are filling out your employment history on your job application form, you should use action words when describing your job duties. Use powerful works like “developed,” “created,” “lead,” and more. Be sure you draw attention to awards and accolades you received. When filling out the section about why you left your job, be politically correct. It is not a good idea to criticize your last employer on your job application form, because it calls into question your potential company loyalty.
