The feeling of anxiety is characterized by overwhelming worry, fear, nervousness and apprehension. Some fears and worries are justified, such as worry about a loved one or in anticipation of taking a quiz, test, or other examination. However, sometimes anxiety becomes a problem and interferes with your ability to sleep or otherwise function. Anxiety may occur without a cause, or it may occur based on a real situation but may be out of proportion to what would normally be expected. Severe anxiety can have a serious impact on daily life.
There are three ways that you can reduce your anxiety.
One way to relieve an overwhelming sense of anxiety is to keep from allowing yourself to get stressed out when situations begin to cause anxiety. This might seem a little simplistic, but the reality is that stress is not an action, or a thing. It is a reaction to a stimulus. If you can train yourself to pause before you acknowledge the stress reaction, you can often avoid that reaction. For example, when someone is being unreasonable, you can either become tense and anxious or just pause and tell yourself that it is his problem, not yours. By learning to make yourself pause and evaluate the options, the situation can be made to produce less stress and anxiety.
The second goal is to find a time to practice breathing when you are not overly stressed or feeling anxiety. Focus your attention on breathing. If you begin to feel stress and anxiety, go back to the breathing, focusing your energy there, not on the anxiety. This is just another form of making yourself pause before reacting to the stiumulus, and the breathing focus is a way to counter your reaction to the stress.
Getting some regular physical exercise, even if you don't enjoy exercising it, will allow you to relax by soothing your mind and making your heart beat slower.
You might not get completely rid of your anxiety if you perform these steps, but you can do much to curb your anxiety and lessen its effects. Following them will allow you a fresh perspective, solving other problems at the same time. If you faithfully practice these techniques, it will result in an entirely new outlook on life. You will learn how to look at the bright side of life and become a more amiable person. You may find that people are now seeking you out for company, which will give you a needed boost in confidence, making you forget how bad the anxiety was in the past.
You can treat the anxiety without using a doctor, from the comfort of home, which will come in handy when you need to be focused for an interview, test, stage performance, or any other case when staying calm will be important for success. Under those circumstances, there are several ways to relieve the anxiety, such as taking a long bath, talking to someone who will be supportive of you, doing breathing exercises and picturing yourself having already succeeded in your task.
