Spotting Canine Ringworm And Looking After Your Pet
Jennifer King
A common dog complaint is ringworm, and it can be avoided and treated if your dog has the condition. Many ailments affect dogs, some are very frequent and arise no matter how well looked after your pet is at any time. Dogs are animals who explore the outside world, and they can get into anything. Ringworm seems to be typical in puppies and older dogs. Other frequent dog ailments can be avoided with proper vaccinations and proper health care. Ringworm is a skin infection that targets the overall health of your dog.
The frequent dog infection ringworm has multiple different ways it can be spotted and diagnosed. The common way to identify this fungal skin infection is by using a black light. The ringworms glow in the black light when the light hits them. Sometimes this method doesn't work and your vet will need to use another test to identify the fungal skin infection.
If you notice small patches on your pets body without hair, chances are your dog has ringworm. The skin will be scaly and display pus in the area. With time the patches become bigger when they receive no medical attention. You will see this fungi on the tail, head and legs.
If the health of your pet is healthy then the skin infection will clear up by itself in about four months. In saying that, when severe cases exist, a cure will be needed. If your pet has the lesion, cutting their hair around the area is needed, but you mustn't touch the lesion or it will spread. Apply a topical anti fungal cream after cutting the hair away. Such anti fungal creams like miconazole and lotrimin creams are used for this purpose, or you can apply natural, side effect free alternatives. You mustn't let your dog lick the area where you administer the cream. A dog funnel collar might be needed to stop your pet from reaching the area.
If the cream doesn't cure the infection on its own, anti fungal shampoos and anti fungal dips will assist the cream, and help the infected patch to heal quicker. A few other anti fungal active ingredients are griseofulvin and itraconazole, which treat dogringowrom quite well.
Keeping your pet in perfect health and protected from fungal, viral and bacterial infections is your responsibility. The number one need of your pet is regular vaccines and proper care. Dogs need vaccines against distemper, rabies and provirus. Your pet also needs to be looked at by a vet annually for heartworm which can cause death to your dog if not properly prevented. Keep in mind that rabies vaccinations are given every two years and distemper vaccinations are received annually.
Many conditions cause health issues, and in some breeds of dogs, the breed is prone to more health issues than others. Heart problems and joint problems account for some of these more serious health issues. When looking to purchase a dog, you need to be wise to some of the health issues that can emerge in a dog's life. Besides the everyday parasites and injuries from rough play, some dogs are prone to eye infections, ear infections and mange.
