Hold It In Place!
In 1931 the first electric can opener was invented. Later in 1950's and 60's a larger variety of can openers were available by choice. Wall mounted can openers had a gear driven cutting wheel and a magnet to hold the lid once the can was open. Can openers became available in a variety of colors and shapes.
By the 1960's both the wall mounted opener and the counter top can opener was available. Sunbeam and Black and Decker were among the top producers of the electric can opener.
A can could be placed against the cutting wheel and held in place by a lever to be opened. Can openers have really improved since the 1800's. No more hand turning the lever to open a can. Once you get into the groove of using an electric can opener , you never want to use a hand held can opener. In the event of a power outage the older hand held model is wonderful to have in your kitchen.
Today many can openers can be mounted under the kitchen cabinets out of the way of you preparing other food. Many can food are now being displayed with pop tops. Many can soups and lunch meats now have pop tops. This can be very handy when camping out or power outage.
Men and women in the military at one time used a PT37 to open can food while in the field. This little can opener fit right into their jacket pockets. Now most military food is delivered in small pouches. This is lighter to carry around easier to get into.
It would be very hard on cooks today if they had to chisel or stone a can to open it. Kitchenware has come along ways since the can opener was invented. When you are cooking and need a can opened , it is very nice to know you can depend on that electric can opener to help in preparing your meal.
This would be a great way to involve the family in cooking. Let them help open the can goods for you. It will help in giving them a learning experience at what kitchenware is required in every kitchen. Don't live in ancient times: Invest in a modern can opener.
