Acne Skin Care Products: How Do They Really Work?
Trevor Mulholland
Acne skin care products vary in the mechanism by which they work. Oral treatments, topical ointments, hormone therapies, surgical procedures and home-based formulas act on the skin differently and provide solution to pimples using different procedures and each has its own basic ingredient and its own way of battling pimples.
Some of the acne skin care products available in the market today are examined below based on the mechanism by which they work.
1. Natural remedies. These organic or herb-based solutions cure acne by working on the inside of a person's body. They are formulated to correct nutritional imbalance and promote overall health. The manufacturers of such acne cures believe that health starts on the inside of the human body and that healthy skin can be achieved by focusing on developing overall health.
2. Hormone therapies. Since acne is believed to be caused by hormonal imbalance, hormone treatments are thus designed to address the core of the problem. Hormone cures are particularly designed for women since they suffer from hormone-related problems more than men. These medications act by reducing androgen levels in women to control the skin's production of sebum, a condition associated with increased possibility of infection.
3. Antibacterials. These drugs are formulated to kill the bacteria in the skin, particularly the acne-causing Propionibacterium acnes. Antibacterials attack the microorganisms in the skin which cause inflammation and produce pus that can eventually lead to acne.
4. Formulas that prevent pore blockage. Exfoliants and retinoids are just two examples of this type of pimple treatment. They work by inducing the top layer of the skin to shed and peel. This prevents dead skin cells from building up in the pores and creating a place for bacteria to live in. These cures also allow the oxygen to get through the pores to create a healthier environment.
5. Anti-inflammatory drugs. Medications that prevent inflammation are usually in the form of creams, gels or lotions. They are applied to the affected area to reduce the size of bumps and eliminate pimples that have heights. They are sometimes used in combination with other treatments depending on the severity or the type of acne that is being treated.
6. Preventive cures. These are basic skin care products that promote healthy skin to prevent acne from occurring. For example, a person with oily skin will be prescribed with an alcohol-based facial wash or facial toner to minimize the oil in his or her skin since oily skin is very much prone to zits. For people with dry skin, moisturizers are usually recommended to prevent peeling or shedding which could make their skin vulnerable to bacteria.
Acne skin care products differ in the way by which they attack pimples. Each product has a certain focus and to decide which suits you best, a consultation with a dermatologist or a physician is the first step to take.
