Urinary Tract Infections Antibiotics
Jennifer King
Urinary tract infections that are unaffected by antibiotics are on the increase, and this is affecting thousands of women's lives everyday. For a lot of women antibiotics are their only form of treatment for a UTI because that is all their doctor can prescribe them. This is the main problem now with all bacterial infections as doctors prescribe antibiotics for all infections so in the end it's only you, the patient, that suffers.
Antibiotics are an excellent weapon against bacteria, but many women now have trouble due to being prescribed them too often, using them for too long and not using them properly. Antibiotics are so easily available now that women are using the wrong type of anti bacterial medication for their infection, and/or they're not using them for long enough.
When you're suffering from any bacterial infection you must consult your doctor before you start attempting to treat yourself. Only your doctor will know which type of antibiotics you need for your infection, and how long you need to take them for.
Many women are purchasing their antibiotics online, and not taking them long enough to kill all of the E coli bacteria in their body. The E coli lives naturally in everyone's colon, and this E coli needs to be killed as well as the E coli causing your urinary tract infection. If the E coli in your colon isn't killed along with the bacteria in your urinary tract then it will become resistant to the antibiotics. This means, that when you get another UTI it will be caused by a strain of E coli that is resistant to antibiotics so then they have no effect on the infection.
If you've taken antibiotics before for another infections like a throat infection then the E coli that lives naturally in your colon can become resistant while your curing your throat infection. For the same reason as above, any bacteria that is left alive after a course of antibiotics will become resistant. This is why you need to take them for the full course, and only with your doctor's supervision.
Not taking the full course of medication is another cause of resistant E coli. Sometime the symptoms will disappear before the E coli is killed, and this makes many women think that their infection is cured so they stop taking their antibiotics before the course is finished. This lets the E coli re-infect the urinary tract, and it will be resistant to the next course of medication. Then another course is prescribed, and instead of killing the bacteria, it just turns it into a stronger strain.
The major problem with urinary tract infections that are not cured with antibiotics is they can then spread to the kidneys where the infection can damage them.
If you're suffering with recurrent UTI's then it's important that you visit your doctor for a proper examination.
