Types Of Roof Shingles
Realart
Asphalt shingles are the most common for residential roofs. Constructed in layers, asphalt shingles have a fibreglass base, over which there is a layer of asphalt-coated material, topped with a layer of ceramic granules. The granules give asphalt shingles their color.
Asphalt shingles are the most popular choice for residential roofs for a number of reasons. First, they are the most versatile and they are available in a variety of colors. Flat, three-tab shingles are the most common style of asphalt shingle, but shingle manufacturers are creating an increasing number of decorator and architectural styles to suit a wide variety of residential designs.
Other materials used to make residential shingles include metal, wood and slate. The main advantages of metal shingles are their light weight, easy installation and they can be fabricated in a variety of styles. However, they are susceptible to damage and fading over time.
Wood shingles, or shakes, come in a variety of styles; most of which give your home a rustic look. But they generally do not last as long as other types of shingles and are less fire resistant.
Most homeowners consider slate shingles to be the best and longest lasting residential roof shingle. A slate roof can last more than a hundred years. Usually the only reason a slate shingle needs replacement is because the metal hardware fastening it to the roof has corroded. The down side is that slate shingles can cost about 10 times as much as good quality asphalt shingles. Slate shingles are also very heavy. Many residential roofs, particularly in older homes, need structural reinforcement before slate shingles can be used.
If you have an unlimited budget, slate is the best choice for residential roof shingles. They are long lasting and homeowners appreciate the distinctive look that slate gives to a home.
However, most of us have to watch costs and, unless you want the character of wood, or have a situation where metal may be best, asphalt should be your roof shingle of choice for many reasons.
At about half the cost of wood or metal shingles, asphalt is by far the least expensive shingle. They will last about as long as metal shingles and about twice as long and wood shakes. They come in a wider variety of colors, styles and textures than any other residential roof shingle. Asphalt shingles are available in a number of different looks, including slate, wooden shakes and dimensional designs.
Other advantages of asphalt shingles include easy availability ? wood, metal and slate are generally not available in your local hardware store ? and the versatility to be easily installed on most residential roofs.
No matter which residential roofing material you prefer, a trusted roofing contractor can recommend and install the best roof for your home.
