Treatment For Flat Feet
Jeff Foster
This motion can cause extreme stress or inflammation on the plantar fascia, potentially causing discomfort and can lead to other foot problems, such as plantar fascitis. Flat feet can be in either one foot or both feet. Individuals that have a low arch or no arch at all are referred to as flat feet or fallen arch.
Flat feet can be hereditary or caused by a fore foot varus, which is a condition in which the joint in the foot pronates (which means the foot rolls to much). Over-pronation is very common in individuals who have flexible, flat feet.
A ruptured tendon can also cause flat feet. Flat feet can also be caused by obesity, pregnancy or repetitive pounding on a hard surface causing the arch to weaken. Other causes of flat feet can be diabetes, high blood pressure, certain kinds of arthritis and even over-use.
Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition. The arch area can be very tender and you will notice that your shoes tend to wear out quickly causing you to need to replace shoes more often than normal. If you take a close look at your shoes you will often notice that inside soles of the shoes have worn much more than the outsides of the shoes. Particularly the inside area around the heels of the shoes will generally show the most excessive wear.
Flat feet can also lead to corns or hardened skin under the sole of the foot as a result of the excessive wear on the feet. Over-pronation can lead to plantar fascitis, neuromas, heels spurs or bunions.
Treatment for flat feet should begin by wearing wider fitting shoes and purchasing quality insoles or orthotics to take the pain from the arch.
Your podiatrist will normally prescribe flat feet insoles that will cup the heel and support the arch helping to relieve the symptoms of flat feet. The correct footwear with a firm heel counter is recommended most often and will give the extra support and stability.
Flat feet is often times preventable if the feet are taken care of properly.
Almost 25% of Americans suffer with flat feet but there is hope for those who suffer. Flat feet can be painful condition and the correct footwear, weight loss and orthotics will bring positive results.
