Wellness Dog Food Ingredients
Joshua Hacken
A good dog food must have high quality ingredients, and it must meet a minimum standard of quality to be considered good dog food. High quality ingredients in turn mean high nutrition for your beloved dog. The ingredients in a good dog food are carefully chosen based on their quality. Many times these ingredients are the same ones that can also be found in human food. The high costs involved in finding, evaluating and researching high quality ingredients for dog food has led to the high price tag of good quality dog food. It is because of this reason that some dog food manufacturers choose to go the cheap way by providing second grade dog food.
These dog food manufacturers do this because people are ignorant of the importance of a high quality dog food and more importantly, because of the cheap price these second grade dog good offers. Furthermore, it is very convenient for them to buy dog food at the grocery store while they are shopping for their weekly household needs.
For those of you who are unaware, Alpo is a pet food manufacturer that manufactures pet food that is sold in grocery stores the world over. Being a reputable company, one would think that Alpo would actually care about the pets that eat the food that they produce however for the trained eye this just is not the case.
Alpo Lamb Meal, Rice & Barley Formula - This dog food to the trained eye is as appealing as a day old glass of milk left out in the sun. The ingredients are of a low quality, making it a terrible choice of food for your dog.
Firstly, the protein contained in these ingredients is cheap in quality. Usually a dog food label lists the ingredients in a way so that the highest protein source is listed first and the lowest protein source is listed last. In our example here, the ingredients are listed in this order: corn, chicken by-products, poultry by-products, animal fats, lamb meal.
Moreover, we see that lamb meal is listed last on the ingredients list, even though it is the only high quality ingredient. The rest of the ingredients are animal by-products, which tell us that Alpo is very concerned in providing the cheapest protein source in its dog food.
Since these by-products make up the top five ingredients of the dog food, it means they carry a lot of weight in the overall make up of the food.
Your beloved dog should not eat this kind of food as it is not good for their health. Alpo is a very reputable company, and the fact that it makes a lot of money every year by manufacturing and selling cheap dog foods indicates that its objective is to make money and stay profitable. This is why you should avoid buying its food for your dog.
