College writing courses give students a good chance to learn that writing can be an enjoyable experience. Previous schooling has left me, and maybe others, with an unfair negative opinion towards writing. College has given writing a second chance for me, leaving behind the earlier days of forced idea writing, by allowing self made thesis and introducing personal feedback into the writing process.

Writing in high school was not very enjoyable. For four years I was made by my teachers to despise having to write. Every paper was forced to go along with their narrow topics while not allowing any input by the students. I was not able to write how I wanted to, they all had to be done how the teachers wanted them to be done. It was more of a task keeping to exactly what they wanted other than wanting to explore the information creating your own opinion on the topic. Each student s paper was essentially the same thing in the end, all molded by one source. To me this is not what writing is about, writing should be unique and have a sense of how the writer wants to make their point. This could not be done under the strict guidelines set forth in high school but writing is not like that as I soon learned.

Writing in college turned out to be enjoyable. A new way of expressing and gathering ideas, free writing, was introduced. The teacher had us make our own thesis other than giving us them and forcing us to conform to the one idea. This is the freedom writing should be about and turned writing into something interesting. With the increase of freedom, some challenge is added as well. While being forced on a certain path the writing was easy even though much hated. When given our own path to choose there is a welcomed challenge to the writing and gives it value. The papers are no longer copies of the other students just with different mistakes but they are now pieces of original work that mean a lot more than any other papers I have written before.

Writing is something that can be enjoyed by everybody. I once hated to have anything to do with writing, but a fair chance for it was never given to me in high school. College has let me experience writing in the way that it should be and it s a form of expression that is well liked.
