What's Wrong With The World Today
Catherine Harvey
That was back in the days when Culture Club were at the top of the charts singing Karma Karma Karma Karma Karma Chameleon. And what exactly is wrong with that? Ok, he did look a little weird but it was new fashion and what did an old lady know about fashion?
She was used to listening to 78's where you could hear ALL the words and they ALL told a story. Yeah, boring!! Then she had to contend with my father's fifties and early sixties music. Ok, she would agree you could still understand the words but what the hell were they wearing?
The only type of music download my grandmother knew about was downloading seven inch vinyl singles into the bin. How she could freak out about song words is beyond me. There are plenty of artists who have written weird song lyrics and made themselves a fortune from it.
Take, for instance, Marvin Gaye. Crooner extraordinaire who sang the lyrics 'The world is just a great big onion.... the only way to get rid of this great big onion is to plant love seeds until it dies'. And what planet was he on? From the same era we have 'Life is a minestrone, served up with parmesan cheese. Death is a cold lasagne, suspended in deep freeze' from 10cc.
Music may be the food of love but music downloads with these words are sure to get you strange looks when you're singing on the morning bus - unless you have a can of Stella in your hand at the same time.
Of course, music downloads with today's lyrics are still accompanied by a few raised eyebrows. Take Timbaland and his insulting line of 'Your body ain't Pamela Anderson, it's a struggle just to get you in the caravan' would see me severely miffed if anyone sang them to me. To top that, he asks 'Can you handle me the way I are'. Do I sound like my grandmother when I say that's just not proper English?
I'd also be slightly concerned about the music download from Maroon 5, bang up to date but quite worrying that 'The taste of her breath, I'll never get over. The noises that she made kept me awake'. Don't think I'd be sleeping soundly next to the guy that wrote that.
I'm sure if you ask any generation, they would be able to come up with at least one song with strange lyrics. It's just weird how catchy they seem to be. Another example of going with the flow of society and making ourselves look like morons.
It is an odd phenomenon but put a catchy tune to some odd words and music downloads will be surging through computers all over the country making their way onto iPods and into the minds of music download fans everywhere. Just a pity you can't understand half of them.
