Bicycle Tour Of California
Jamie Hanson
The outerbanks of north carolina is a beautiful string of nearly undeveloped islands. The southern most OBX islands are Ocracoke, Hatteras, and Pea Island.. The Downtube will organize a free bicycle tour of these islands between July 30th and August 2nd. We have created an interactive forum for questionsabout the tour at http://www.downtube.com/Folding_Bike_Forum/read.php'2,715 . The forum will assist people to carpool to Hatteras and finding camping partners. Tour details are below:
Day #1 7/30/09 We will meet at 10AM at the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry in Hatteras. We will leave cars in the parking lot and bike around Ocracoke Village. The village is about 12 miles from the ferry station. Once in the village we will go to Lighthouse Rd, British Cemetary Rd, and the Canal paths. We will stop for lunch at Creekside. After some shopping and swimming we will ride back to the Hatteras Ferry. Once off the ferry we will ride ( or drive ) 7 miles to the Frisco campground, which is right on the Ocean. Campsites can be split between up to 5 people.
Day #2 7/31/2009 We will ride to Buxton stopping at the Hatteras Lighthouse, and possibly walking to the point ( if it is windy ). We will eat at the cafe on the north side of Buxton. Afterwards we will ride to Avon with free camping on North End Rd ( on the sound side ). We will also have free kayaks to use. Free parking is availablke at Spa Koru in Avon. We will have a shuttle from Koru to the Frisco campground in the morning.
Day #3 8/01/2009 We will ride to Waves and camp at Camp Hatteras. We will be at one of the thinnest part of the island. They also have indoor & outdoor pools and hot tub.
Day #4 8/2/2009 We will ride through Pea Island, a beautiful uninhabited island. The ride will end at the north end of Pea Island. Riders can choose to extend the tour and stay at Oregon Inlet campground. We will have a free shuttle taking people with bikes back to their cars in Avon.
