Figuring Out What To Get Dad
For many people, nothing brings on a headache like trying to figure out what to buy there parents for the holidays. Moms are difficult, but dads are nearly impossible. I used to always flail around when trying to find something, but hit upon a method that might work for you. I have actually been thanked multiple times for gifts the last few years, something that never happened before.
First off, it is important to remember that what you buy represents something unique. You appreciation of everything your father has done? Yes, but there is a more important thing to focus on. Your father busted his butt to raise you and it wasn't always easy. I don't care how easy you might think your family had it, trust me when I say there were times your dad was sweating something and couldn't sleep. Simply put, he sacrificed a lot by working all week and going to all your games and events on the weekend. Raising a kid or kids takes a ton of time and energy, which means he didn't have time to explore his own interests. This is where your solution lies.
When figuring out what to get your dad, there is one way to get the perfect thing. You must figure out his true interests and get something in that area. Growing up in San Diego, my father always liked sailing. A punk kid like me, however, didn't exactly give him a lot of time or money to pursue his passion. So, something related to sailing seems like the perfect solution. Ah, but not just a boring product of something. Nope, a better solution is to get dad some kind of experience in his area of existence. By experience, I mean something like a trip or course or whatever. In the case of my father, I picked him up a one day sailing experience on an America's Cup boat.
Now, you are probably thinking a day of sailing on an America's Cup boat probably cost, well, a boatload. Nope. It was $99 and is hopefully going to be a lot more appreciated than a sweater, book or tie. If you father likes to fish, hunt around the web for guided fishing trips. There is some service out there offering whatever you want to give. If the expense is more than you can afford, call up your brother and sisters to discuss doing a group purchase.
For eighteen years or longer, you dad set aside his own interest to take care of you and your siblings. Don't you think it is time to show him you appreciate it with a present he will actually love?
