What To Do New Years
Kristin Denton
New Year's has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year.
It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. But very often those resolutions get put by the way side come about February.
Why?
Because most of them require change... losing weight, stopping smoking, bringing back the love, trust and intimacy to your relationship. And change is difficult to do. In the end, your need for food out-weighs your need to be pretty. Your need for peace out-weighs your need for being with family. Your need for ease out-weighs your need to learn something new.
Here's a list of the Top Ten Most Common New Year's Resolutions. Do you see anything you were thinking of resolving to change this year?
1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends
2. Fit in Fitness
3. Tame the Bulge
4. Quit Smoking
5. Enjoy Life More
6. Quit Drinking
7. Get Out of Debt
8. Learn Something New
9. Help Others
10. Get Organized
All of these are great goals to have... but HOW are you going to make these changes? Usually, just declaring a change for the New Year doesn't work. Maybe what you need is a method for creating transformation in your life...
What you need is a way of communicating with yourself and others that helps bring about the changes you want.
What has helped my partner and I is learning new communication tools and improving our skills. That's why we teach the Magic Relationship Method. It gives you a way to approach at least 4 of the goals of the New Year's Top 10 list:
1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends
Having a communication method to follow in stressful situations allows us to stay connected with each other and our families and friends. There's no longer a need to retreat and isolate ourselves when we have a way to reach out to others that builds compassion and understanding.
5. Enjoy Life More
Paul and I now have a relationship that makes life worth living. I love the quote: "We never ask the meaning of life when we are in love." --Bhagwan
When asked to rank the quality of their lives, most people rank their lives higher when they enjoy loving, committed relationships with their spouse, family and friends. And you can learn HOW to create that loving closeness through your communication.
8. Learn Something New
Learning something new makes us feel alive. Nobody likes to get stuck in a rut. And if you learn something new for your lover, that alone will re-ignite some of the passion that may be wearing off over time. Learn something new this New Years - something you wished you had learned years ago: how to communicate with yourself and others to create the understanding, trust and connection you desire.
9. Help Others
One of our human needs, along with food, water, love and appreciation, is CONTRIBUTION. Us humans are hard-wired to want to help others. By learning how to communicate with your loved ones in a peaceful and compassionate way, you'll be demonstrating for them how to find this peace in their lives. You'll model a way of expressing your feelings and asking for your needs to met that all people can relate to and appreciate - without the yelling, manipulating and upsets that we've inherited through our culture.
Commit the first day of the New Year to renewing your relationship with your beloved.
What this communication method has allowed my partner and I to do is to lay the foundations for a lifetime filled with trusty, honest and open communication in our relationship. If you want the relationship of your dreams, you can learn ...
* How to avoid taking things personally.
* How to encourage compassion and empathy in others (and yourself).
* A tool that will allow you to effectively and honestly express your most private feelings and thoughts without ending up in a fight.
* How to deal with your spouse's childhood issues so it doesn't ruin your current relationship.
* 5 Relationship-Wrecking Communication Mistakes to avoid at work and at home.
Sit down right now, grab your mouse and click on the link below. It will take you to a survey Paul and I have created that will help you decide what the biggest issues for you are around your relationship right now, and what you want from your relationship.
After you take the survey, jot down for yourself what resolution you want to make for your relationship this New Year. And then do it! Read up on relationship skills, take a workshop, and most of all, discuss it with your beloved. They'll love the renewed interest in and passion for your relationship.
