How it is used

Window Tinting makes use of a transparent plastic film or metallic laminate which are applied to glass windows. This dyed or metalized film serves various purposes mainly to lessen the sun's heat, light and ultraviolet radiation in the interior space. Compared to specialty glass that is altered chemically, window tints are less costly and easier to apply. Solar window films can last up to 15 years.

Depending on its purpose, a window film can be applied either to the outside or inside pane of glazed windows. If the goal is to provide heat energy and store heat inside a home during the cold winter months, the tint should be applied to the inside pane of the window. However, if the aim is to prevent the sun's heat from entering the house, the film should be applied to the outside window pane.

Types of tints

Window films are made of polyester with a thickness ranging from two to seven millimeters. One side is coated with a durable adhesive while the exposed part is treated with a scratch-resistant coating. Chemical UV blockers are incorporated to filter out UV radiation.

Films come in different types-dyed, deposited, sputtered and hybrid. The purpose of dyed film is primarily to absorb heat. The deposited type is the darker film with a highly mirrored surface. The sputtered film is the most expensive as the technology involved in making it is quite complicated. The hybrid, on the other hand, is a combination of the dyes and reflective metals.
