Product Owners & Resale Rights
Jason Johns
Apart from sales of your product, how else can you bring money in from your product?
One of the most popular options is through selling the rights to resell your product.
What does this mean?
It means you license other people to sell your product. It differs from recruiting affiliates because typically they will pay a higher fee for your product and will keep all the profits.
For example, if your book retails at $19 you may sell resale rights for, say, $97.
The question is, when do you sell resale rights?
You can either sell it as soon as you create the product or after you've maximised your income from the product and sales are dropping off.
If you sell the resale rights at the start of your product lifecycle then it is a good way to raise some quick cash for other projects. It will mean that you have competitors out there selling your product competing directly with you.
However, it does mean that your book and your name get out in the marketplace. This is particularly useful if you are new to the field and want to build your name. It also means that any links that are within the book are intact and you will benefit from people reading the book and clicking on the links. This can be used to your advantage.
If you sell the resale rights towards the end of the product lifecycle, then this has a slightly different set of dynamics. You have already made a lot of money from your product and sales are selling off, so offering resale rights is a good method of getting extra income from your product. You can sell the rights for several times the value of the product itself and still benefit from people following the links in the books.
Another option, which is typically only given towards the end of a product lifecycle or if you want to turn a product viral is to sell Master Resell Rights. This means you confer the rights to sell the resale rights to the product to other people. This will be attractive to many prospective purchasers as they will know the value of resale rights and see it's benefit for your business.
As the book will still remain unchanged then you still benefit from clicks from people reading the book.
One final option is to offer Private Label Rights( PLR) for your book. This allows people to rewrite the book, rebrand it, and put their own name on it. This is an excellent thing to do when a product is at the end of its lifecycle. Once sales have dwindled to a trickle you can sell the PLR rights for a larger sum of money and concentrate on other products.
You could also sell the PLR rights to partly completed products or if you need to earn some quick cash. If the product is new and a hot niche then you can obviously charge a premium for PLR rights.
Resale Rights, Master Resale Rights and Private Label Rights have their own benefits as outlined above. As a product owner and Internet Marketer you need to decide how these fit into your cash flow strategy and what the best method of leveraging these for your personal benefit.
