Blue Light Acne Therapy
Lisa Ortega
If you are seeking treatment for you acne and desire to avoid the use of creams, chemicals, and topical ingredients that must be continually applied, there is an option that may interest you. Modern skin care professionals have found that blue light may be a way to treat certain kinds of acne effectively. Though large studies have not been performed, there is reason to believe that blue light may assist with acne based on small studies.
Blue light acne therapy is a treatment which involves placing the skin within a certain distance of a blue light for a certain period of time to create a hostile environment for certain types of acne. Thus the light ultimately results in the killing off of acne causing bacteria. The blue light does not have UV rays so it is not damaging to the skin. Since long term testing has not been done on this area of the treatment, it is a great idea to do more research and consult with an experienced dermatologist. Nonetheless, it is a treatment that may help your skin and is worth trying. Blue light acne therapy can be used for about 15 minutes per day over the areas of the skin with acne. This can assist with the elimination of acne causing bacteria. During treatment, it may be common to notice some dryness, some swelling of the skin after treatments, and some temporary changes in the pigment of the skin. These side effects are the most commonly reported and the light has generally been seen to have very minor effects. Since large tests have not been performed with hundreds or thousands of people, it is important to be informed and to ask questions about the treatment.
Blue light acne therapy works best for those with inflammatory acne and not necessarily those with deeper set acne, like cystic acne. Acne that originates deeper in the skin has been seen to aggravate the cysts and make them more swollen and painful. Thus using the blue light for deeper acne is not recommended. It seems to work better for the type of acne that would respond better to topical treatments anyway, such as those that can be dried out with time by using a topical cream or gel. Cystic acne generally does not respond very well to topical creams or gels and requires a different approach to treatment.
There are always new ways to help heal the skin, and if you are seeking out alternative ways to treat your acne, blue light acne therapy may be a great option for your skin type. Asking a dermatologist that you trust about the treatment may be a great way to find out if the treatment is best for you specific skin symptoms. Being open to new treatments may be a good idea also if other treatments have not worked for you or if you are not interested in using topical creams or gels. Understanding any benefits as well as risks associated with the treatment is a good idea. This will help to ensure that you understand the procedure and how it will affect your skin. Also, having realistic yet positive expectations can help to ensure that you are even more satisfied with the results.
