Banarasi brocade speaks of the age old culture and the history of Indian textiles richest traditions. From princesses of the mightiest Indian kingdoms to popular Hollywood glitterati's – Banarasi brocade has enjoyed admiration from all. Weather the craftsmen use the traditional dyes or the more popular aminobenzine one, they only uses the most punctilious treated silk.
Legends has it that when Lord Buddha attained nirvana, his body was wrapped in Banarasi brocade. The Banarasi brocade flourished much under the Mughal period during the 14th century. Earlier the women used to weave cotton sari's but soon they switched on to the silk saris as they were becoming much popular and were sold at high prices in the market.
Banaras is the center of silk weaving in India since time immemorial. The work is highly practiced in this region by the large number of communities. If you ever plan to travel to Banaras, do not forget to witness the brocade weavers working on the jaala loom, that is an experience in itself.
