Overcoming Acute Shyness Through Proper Relaxation
Sharon Bell
Shyness is something that can be considered more as an emotional or psychological condition rather than a physical one. And more often than not, being shy is brought about by some external factors like pimples on your face, a botched nose job, or cellulite presence on your thighs among other things. But for some doctors, shyness is a subject of depression; in fact, among mind health professionals, shyness has taken on a more formal name which is social anxiety. And for most of these professionals, taking antidepressant pills is the best way to deal with shyness.
However, it has been repeatedly shown by research studies that antidepressant pills or other mainstream psychiatric drugs can only work for about one fourth of the population of all those afflicted with acute shyness. Prescribed medication is never meant to be the first and only option for treating shyness. To effectively deal with this emotional maladjustment, you need to tackle low self-esteem and solve the particular situations or aspects of your life that makes you shy; and in this area, visits to your psychiatrist can be very helpful.
But there is a third symptom present among people with extreme sense of shyness. That is having hypersensitivity characterized by sweaty palms and breathlessness. And in this aspect, you can do a lot yourself to help you overcome shyness. Your solution against shyness is all about increasing your sense of relaxation and there are basically three things which can help you attain that relaxed state of mind.
Proper Breathing Exercises
Due to the body's autopilot mode, you rarely think about the way you breathe; in fact, most people take breathing for granted. If you want to attain that relaxed mood and avoid all the shyness indicators, you need to learn diaphragmatic breathing. This is a breathing technique that involves not just the rising and falling of your chest, but your abdomen as well.
Breathing with your diaphragm is a way of taking deep, slow and rhythmic breaths. You start by inhaling air through your nose, then draw that oxygen-rich air down to your abdomen, next hold your breath for five to eight seconds, and finally exhale through your mouth. It is as simple as that yet the benefits of this breathing exercise in eliminating your shyness can not be overemphasized. Remember, the keywords here are slow and deliberate breathing, not forceful inhaling and exhaling of air.
Power Of Visualization
Your brain is a very powerful tool. You can see and feel whatever your brain tells you; which is why you are bothered and shy about certain factors in the first place. Well, you can use all the power of your mind for your own good against shyness.
To begin with, do you know that increasing the temperature of the skin in your hands can greatly help overcome shyness? Well, this is also the reason why you get cold sweaty palms whenever you are in a fit of shyness. Increase the temperature of the skin in your hand area and you can deal with even the most shameful situations for you.
Start with the breathing exercises mentioned above. Then focus all your thoughts and energies into giving your hands a warmer temperature. This may sound crazy, but this can really work if you keep doing this step for about half a minute. This is called visualization and you can be creative about it. For example, you can picture yourself out on a beach basking under the warm sun and sure enough you will feel that your hands will be warm and heavy, makes you feel that you can conquer the world bravely.
Positive Affirmation Against Shyness
This step may well be a part of visualization because it also sounds very much like the power of the mind at work. But providing yourself a positive affirmation against shyness is more than just visualizing your surroundings. Through affirmation, you tell yourself to stop being shy, that all the social anxiety that you feel are not permanent and will disappear eventually. Through affirmation you start to control yourself against shyness.
Truly, shyness can be resolved. If your shyness is brought about by the presence of unwanted appearances on your body, like cellulite, the best thing to do to overcome your emotional problem is to take out those unwanted appearances. For cellulite, you can always apply products like Celluthin which can bring back a smooth and lump-free skin that you can be proud of. Visit www.Celluthin.com for more details.
