Just as you can train any part of your body, with Neurofeedback you can train your brain! Offered at Mind Spectrum Institute in North Miami Beach, Florida, Neurofeedback, also known as EEG Biofeedback, is training for the brain to enhance cognitive performance, normalize behavior, and stabilize mood.
All of our physical, cognitive, and emotional functions are controlled by the brain. The brain communicates through biochemical and bioelectrical processes. Unwanted symptoms are often an indicator of a poorly regulated brain. One way to chemically regulate the brain is with medication ("drug therapy"). However, a more natural type of treatment consists of training the brain to regulate itself by altering its electrical activity. For instance, we know that slow brain wave activity is responsible for decreased levels of arousal, attention, etc. (e.g., ADD and Depression). An overly active brain, on the other hand, produces overarousal which can lead to Anxiety and Hyperactivity.
Procedure: Neurofeedback is a non-invasive procedure, which consists of monitoring brain waves and providing adequate feedback. One or more electrodes are placed on the scalp to capture the brain wave activity. An amplifier and computer-based instrument processes the signal to provide appropriate feedback. The feedback displayed to the client consists of a video game or image along with audio signals. As activity in the desirable EEG frequency band increases, positive feedback is given. When unwanted brain activity occurs, the feedback is inhibited (stopped).
With consistent training the brain gradually learns to respond to the feedback, thus achieving a more normalized brain wave pattern. The effectiveness of this treatment requires consistency and frequency. To start, 2 or more sessions are recommended. After learning begins to consolidate, the pace can be reduced. A minimum of 20-25 sessions (depending upon the symptoms) is necessary. At Mind Spectrum Institute in North Miami Beach, Florida, we often recommend neurofeedback in addition to traditional therapy.
