Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite, which is a mineral. This semi-precious stone is rarely pure blue, as it usually has rich purple overtones. It has been discovered in northern Tanzania, specifically in Merelani Hills in 1967. It has been considered to be a valuable and popular once cut even if it is not that durable. It is not usually the choice to use as a ting stone because it has a tendency to break.

This stone has been noted for its strong trichroism and it appears to alternately have shades of sapphire blue, sage-green and violet, which depend on crystal orientation. However, tanzanite is usually applied with artificial heat treatment for improving its color, which subdues its trichroism significantly.

Tanzanite was added as one of the official birthstones that are in the list of the American Gem Trade Association in October 2002. It serves as an additional December birthstone.

It is a brittle semi-precious stone and even if it could be worn daily, adequate care must be taken so that it is protected from pressure, knocks and extreme changes in temperature. You should never use a home ultrasonic in cleaning that has tanzanite.

This stone also has several healing properties. It is believed to be a calming stone and would be particularly helpful if worn by an individual who finds himself to be having a chaotic life or an extremely busy lifestyle or if a person is feeling out of sorts. It would be able to bring back the balance and peace in one's life.
