Blink 182 Drummer Travis Barker
Kirby Brooks
In November former blink-182 and current +44 bassist Mark Hoppus revealed that he and his former Blink bandmates Travis Barker and Tom DeLonge were talking about a reunion. The previously estranged trio has been spending time together in the wake of the tragic plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured Barker and DJ AM this fall. Although Hoppus' blog didn't explicitly state that the band was reuniting in the studio, it nonetheless led to speculation of a full-fledged blink-182 reunion after the band went on an indefinite hiatus in February 2005. Hoppus was cautious not to say anything was finalized in his post, but Barker dispelled the circulating rumors in an impromptu video post on http://TMZ.com on December 1. As the saying goes, never say never; check back with http://www.stubhub.com/blink-182-tickets for blink-182 tickets if the reunion does happen.
When asked if blink-182 was planning to reunite, Barker answered, “No. We're friends, though; everyone's getting along pretty good.” Hoppus, on the other hand, was more upbeat on his official site, http://HiMyNameIsMark.com: “In the midst of everything else that has happened lately, Tom, Travis and I have all spoken together. First, through a number on phone calls, and then a couple of weeks ago we all hung out for a few hours. They've all been great, very positive conversations. We're just reconnecting as friends after four years of not talking. It's a good thing.”
Blink-182 formed in San Diego in the early ‘90s as a new-school punk band comprised of guitarist/vocalist DeLonge, bassist/vocalist Hoppus and original drummer Scott Raynor. The trio self-released an EP titled Fly Swatter in 1993 and was at first known simply as Blink; they changed their name to blink-182 because of a similarly-named Irish band subsequent to the release of the LP Cheshire Cat via Grilled Cheese/Cargo in 1994. After stepping out on the 1996-97 Warped Tour alongside Pennywise and NOFX, blink-182 released Dude Ranch jointly by Cargo and MCA and the album went platinum by 1998 thanks to the popularity of “Dammit (Growing Up).” The band officially signed with MCA and replaced Raynor with Travis Barker (formerly of the Aquabats) for blink-182's fourth album, Enema of the State. Released in 1999 and produced by Jerry Finn (Green Day, Rancid) the album pushed blink-182 into the realm of mainstream music and spawned commercially successful singles like “Adam's Song,” “All The Small Things” and “What's My Age Again?” One year later the limited edition release, The Tom, Mark and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back), followed with new song, “Man Overboard” as well as live tracks.
After 2001's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, blink-182 released an eponymous album in 2003 and then unexpectedly announced plans to part ways two years later. In November 2005 a greatest hit compilation was released and then Travis, Tom and Mark began work on other projects. Barker starred in the MTV reality show Meet the Barkers while working on his clothing line, Famous Stars and Straps, and playing with the Transplants; Hoppus worked on his fashion line, Atticus, and stepped on the other side of the studio to produce the soundtrack for Motion City, Commit This to Memory; DeLonge also launched a fashion brand, Macbeth, and started the band Angels and Airwaves. While they didn't come together as a threesome, DeLonge and Barker played under the moniker Boxcar Racer and Hoppus and Barker joined together for +44.
