Cost Of Building Deck
Adam Peters
Summer is just around the corner and with it comes all the fun times you always spend outdoors reading, soaking up the sun or entertaining friends. This year you'd like the times to be a little more special for you and your friends. Your idea to build a deck is the perfect solution. A deck will keep you off the wet grass and the many ants that summer time brings as well as giving you a place to put that beautiful lawn furniture you've been eying up at the building supply store. Although people that have experience doing this sort of thing will tell you building a deck is a breeze, it's a major source of home improvement and needs to be thought out carefully. Decks not only add to your summertime fun but also increase the value of your home, so make sure it looks as good as it can when it's finished.
Considerations to Make Before You Build Your Deck
Some of the things you will need to consider before deciding on building your deck are material, design and location of your deck. Most of these things will be determined by your budget. Keep in mind, you're doing more than just building deck railings, but rather the entire deck from start to finish. Once you've determined your budget and what can afford to spend, you can start figuring out size, material, style and location. With these facts in mind, you can begin the planning of building your deck and deck railings in the most cost-effective manner.
After you've made a layout of what you want your completed deck to look like, you're then able to decide if you can build it yourself or need to hire a contractor. Most people choose to hire a contractor to ensure the safety, beauty and completeness of their deck in a timely fashion. If you want to add additions to your deck like built-in benches or planters, now is the time to decide this, not after the construction is started. Once you have this all planned, you can begin looking for contractors. A great way to find a good contractor is to ask around. Perhaps friends or relatives have recently used a contractor to build their decks. This is the best reference source.
Finding the Right Contractor
Once you've found a few contractors, begin speaking with them about what you want in a deck and get estimates. You can give them a general idea of how much you have to spend but don't give them an exact dollar amount or you'll find all the bids you get are very close to the amount. Ask to see his license and about his references. Everything that you want done in your deck-building process should be listed in the written contract, including cleaning up the mess. If you've done your homework, you know the most reasonable place to get the lumber and materials for your deck. Don't let your contractor talk you into getting it elsewhere unless he has a very good reason for his choice. It's your deck and you're paying for it so the final decisions should be yours.
