Originally, RSS(RDF Site Summary RSS 0.9) was developed by a man named Dan Libby for Netscape. In a few short months, Netscape constructed a simpler and easier-to-use version - Rich Site Summary or RSS 0.91.
It wasn't long before Netscape lost interest and left RSS users high and dry. Winer a version for Userland, RSS 0.91 and claimed ownership. In 2005, Microsoft unveiled "Really Simple Syndication".
RSS is XML
RSS is XML file format. This format is used for syndicating content on the web and is most useful for websites that desire constant updates. Basically RSS is credited for providing one's webpage with more traffic. And because of that, many marketerers are using it along with, web publications and virus reports. Large or small, websites are, in most cases, RSS-enabled.
If you are an avid sports fan. You could subscribe to sports updates through your favorites website to receive the latest about a particular player or event. Multimedia files, like videos or pictures may be included.
This is the way RSS works
You must first download a software or content management system that reads XML format. It is through this software that you can send or receive updates or news. The title, summary and a link to the full article will appear along with multimedia files such as, pictures, videos, mp3s and others.
In order to access the RSS feed, users need an aggregator or a feed reader. The reader searches for updates on RSS-enabled webpages and then displays them to the user. The aggregator can be a standalone program, but sometimes it is simply a web browser extension. There are search engines for web content sent over RSS feeds, such as Plazoo and Feedster.
How to Make an RSS Feed
Couldn't be simpler. Knowing HTML will make it even easier. You can sign up for a blog that creates RSS. If you're using a personal webpage building system, you will need a deeper understanding of RSS.
Constructing feed manually requires that you always include an "item". The item is derived from the applicable content.
When you choose the title and the description, try using something that best describes the web content. An item appears as HTML. You can place an opening chnnel tag in it to define it as an XML file and then identify it as an item by placing right after the channel tag. This is where you will insert the title, summary and link.
